MATTHEW RUNKLE
NEWS 8/29/2015
More than four years since the last news post. I've added a couple of paintings since then, but haven't found my way to broader updates.

I've been running eyeball deep in other projects not the least of which is a major shift in my work that will more completely incorporate the full range of my artistic influences.

The basic stylization of my work will not change, but I'll be shifting to a multi-media approach that brings together 3D modeling, intaglio printmaking, and acrylic painting. Exciting stuff.

More details as they arrive...

Recently landed a new gallery: Milward Farrell Fine Art on Monroe St. in Madison, WI. They have several watercolors including the original of Holding The Light which I never thought I'd put up for sale, but if it can find a home somewhere in the world so be it. Also, reproductions are now available at Franklin Grove in Attica, WI.

Ultra rare two-for-one new work posting. The delightful bedtime story of Burning Of The Ivory Tower continues with At The Hearth and Shadows Of The Ivory Throne. At The Hearth is an interior scene from the tower as it burns while Shadows is the site of the ruins. New technical ground here too. Each piece is acrylic handled as watercolor on a ground of coarse molding paste (sort of like semi-absorbent plaster).

Both will be at The Paint Box Gallery in Ephraim, WI.

This time it really has been a long time, but after a number of detours my first “real” acrylic painting Orpheum Alley is now online. This piece is an assembly of a scene from a parking ramp in downtown Madison, WI. The piece is a small 7” x 3.5”, and will be available at The Paint Box Gallery in Ephraim, WI (Door County) when their Miniature Show Opens on May 30th.

It’s been a little while since my last update, so there are a number of new items.

First, I’ve just released a mini-print collectible series of “The City” paintings. Each mini-print is an open edition giclee which includes background information about each piece printed on the reverse. The back of each print is also hand signed and dated. The mini-prints may be purchased at my eBay store for $9 each or $35 for the set of 5. Shipping is free worldwide on all orders. The mini-print store may be accessed via a new link in the top navigation bar.

The website has been updated with the background details found on the reverse of each mini-print. Simply view each painting of “The City” series individually to read the descriptions.

Also, on the website homepage is a new revision of my Artist Statement. I’ve been working on various incarnations for several months trying to pare down everything extraneous and get straight to the core of what’s behind the work. I think I’ve finally managed to say it as succinctly as possible.

In exhibition news “The City” series is currently included in Upstream People Gallery’s 11th Annual Abstraction Juried Online International Art Exhibition. Decembering At The Slum has been awarded a Special Recognition.

The limited edition hand signed giclee of La Triste Opera Aviaria (The Somber Avian Opera) no. 1 of 100 will be available for bidding at the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation silent auction coming up October 21 & 22. For more information visit the WLA Foundation website.

Finally, the new paintings in acrylic have been delayed a couple of months by a project I’ve started to better develop a deeper understanding of the medium. I had completed a similar study with watercolor several years ago, and didn’t think I was going to tackle the same thing with acrylic. Ultimately, I decided the benefits of completing the study far outweigh the frustration of delaying the new work.

With that I hope all is well, and as always would love to hear from you.

If you've been to MatthewRunkle.com before you've obviously noticed the site has had a complete overhaul. I hope you enjoy the new surroundings.

The narrative angle for my forthcoming work in acrylic has been settled (a trickier task than I had first realized), and I will go into more detail about it as things move forward.

Off for vacation now to finish out July.

NEW WORK
The new paintings in acrylic should be forth coming. I've worked out as many technical wrinkles as I figure is possible before diving in. The only item I'm still working with is a conceptual change of direction. Rather than painting series of works related by shared subject matter I plan to pursue a more narrative approach in which the through-line of a series of images is their relation to a common storyline.

To be clear the purpose of this work will not be to illustrate stories, but create series of images having a meaningful relationship to the central core of a shared narrative concept such that urban imagery, interior spaces, and landscape, for example, may all be seen as part of the same whole. Importantly, individual pieces will not be intended to require knowledge of the storyline, or be seen with other related pieces to have meaning. Each work must stand on its own as an individual statement grounded in the fundamental strength of aesthetics/emotion.

The purpose of the narrative element has one other crucial component: The initiation and potential products of the creative process can be much different. Rather than beginning with an aesthetic framework which is to be manipulated to the greatest end the process begins with a narrative concept for which an aesthetic framework must be invented before manipulation to the greatest end. "La Triste Opera Aviaria (The Somber Avian Opera)" was born from this process, and serves as an excellent example of its great potential. "La Triste's ..." cultural/interior context in a series of otherwise atmospheric/exterior images, extreme proportions, and unique elements such as the bird and piano shapes and their juxtaposition along with the triangle as pianist would likely have never come about without the specific story element requiring their presence.

CURRENT EXHIBITS
"Decembering At The Slum" and "At The Window" - are currently included in Still Point Art Gallery's online exhibit Dwellings. The exhibit runs from June 22 to August 30, 2009.

BIO
Having intended to for some time I finally have my Bio posted online. In current and prior artist statements I've alluded here and there to the path my work has taken to this point. This write up, however, is really the first evenly blended collection of history and purpose.
